The Lightning Thief’s Plan for Success

The showdown is quickly approaching. The February release of “The Lightning Thief” will put an end to the chatter around whether Percy Jackson will achieve Harry Potter success. Personally, I wager to bet it will be a success! The Examiner put together a quick review the movie deets. Click here to read in full, here are some of the highlights:
COMPETITION.
The Lightning Thief releases against Joe Johnston’s The Wolfman (starring Benecio Del Toro, Emily Blunt, and Anthony Hopkins) and Garry Marshall’s Valentine’s Day (starring Julia Roberts, Ashton Kutcher, and Anne Hathaway) – far from competing with the likes of Harry Potter or the Twilight series. A few weeks later, of course, there’ll be just a tad of competition in the remake of 1981’s classic tale of gods, Clash Of The Titans.THE DIRECTOR.
Harry Potter, of course, has been the “it” thing for young adult fantasy stories from quite some time. Back in 2001, the first book-to-film adaptation (of a total of eight) for the Harry Potter series, Harry Potter And The Sorcerer’s Stone, was released. Directed by Chris Columbus, the film became an instant success in the box office and commanded a guaranteed following (in addition to that which was built-in from J.K. Rowling’s book series) for future sequel film translations. Columbus went on to direct the second Harry Potter film (Harry Potter And The Chamber Of Secrets) but did not return for the following sequels. Now, with the Percy Jackson series, it appears that Columbus might be bringing the world another young adult fantasy film series to latch onto. Wrought with playful peril, wit, angst, adventure, and – an important ingredient – lovely special effects, the film has the potential to lead in the new decade as the Harry Potter magic comes to a close.
THE TIMING.
As for opening weekend, Percy Jackson differs greatly from its predecessors in interest since none of the above have had a February 12th release date (all of the Harry Potter films had a June, July, or November release date, the Narnia films were May and December, and The Golden Compass was a December release as well). So, it’ll be interesting to see how Percy Jackson fares in the box office and whether it’ll be the one to bring in the successful sequel saga the world is looking for.
