The Red Pyramid Excerpt

February - 9 - 2010 Comments

Rick Riordan is working on a new series called “The Kane Chronicles” about Egyptian Mythology.

His publisher Disney Hyperion has released the first chapter of the first book The Red Pyramid due for release in May! I was able to read it, and it’s going to be amazing! While it’s somewhat similar to Percy Jackson, (which is to be expected since it’s the same writer!) it still has it’s own sense of originality.

I’m very excited for this book! Until then, check out the excerpt on Disney Hyperion’s website for an exclusive peek at the first chapter!! Go read it here >

How Hot Is Percy Jackson Right Now

February - 1 - 2010 Comments

Good question, right? The fact is, fans of the Percy Jackson book series and the fast approaching The Lightning Thief movie appreciate each for lots of different reasons.

We thought it would be cool to see just how hot the books and movie are right now in Twitterville, so we put together this really cool Percy Jackson “Twitter Wall”. The wall is made up of the actual twitter avatars of all the people tweeting about Percy Jackson right now. You may have seen this before, but we’ve kept our eye on the activity on the wall, and things look like they are really picking up.

If you post an update to twitter, and then head over the the Twitter Wall, you just might see yourself among your friends and other fans! Here’s a snapshot of the wall below… click it and head on over. By the way, you can see what they are saying about the books and movie when you move your mouse over each avatar.

The Lightning Thief Deluxe Edition Review

January - 18 - 2010 Comments

I have in my hands the Deluxe Edition of The Lightning Thief, just released a couple of weeks ago. First off, this is a definite upgrade from my previous dog-eared paperback edition of The Lightning Thief. It is a sleek, very nice way of packaging. It’s a hardcover book, which feels like any hardcover book without a dustcover.

Instead of using a dustcover, they put it into a nice slipcase with the artwork being Percy with his sword, the Minotaur horn and the Empire State Building in the distance. Everything else was cut off or shrunk to size.

The book and slipcase are a nice Navy blue color that looks pretty sweet. Additional upgrades are a ribbon bookmark, which is much handier for marking your spot than folding the corners or using a bookmark which is just annoying sometimes. It also has 8 full pages of new artwork from John Rocco, the illustrator for the PJO book covers which you can see below.

The paper is also different, instead of the sides being smooth, they made the side, (not the top and bottom) of the paper rough, so it makes it a little harder to turn the pages from the side. That is the only downfall of this book (and a very small one at that). The entire package is shrink-wrapped, so as to not let the book get scraped up. Well, unless you drop it before it’s opened. But hopefully that didn’t happen.

All in all, if you don’t own The Lightning Thief, or your old copy is trashed from reading it often (like mine) you should strongly consider buying it.

Amazon has it at a discount right now!

The Last Olympian Is One Of The Years Most Notable Books

January - 18 - 2010 Comments

inquirer.net listed 2009’s most notable books and The Last Olympian made the #10 spot! I thought that The Last Olympian was a great book. Congratulations Mr. Riordan! Thank you for a terrific series!

10) “Percy Jackson and the Olympians: The Last Olympian” by Rick Riordan: The gods are under attack. The demigods must choose sides. And Percy turns 16. All the immortal problems come together in this dense but enjoyable conclusion to an all-ages series that has spawned an upcoming motion-picture adaptation. Read this to find out who the Last Olympian really is. The book is always better—everyone knows that.

Rick Riordan’s Review of The Ultimate Guide To PJO

January - 12 - 2010 Comments

Rick Riordan has updated his blog with an entry about the new Percy Jackson and the Olympians: The Ultimate Guide. It sounds pretty cool and I can’t wait to get it! It comes out within a week. We will post our own review on it when we get our hands on one! He also mentioned that the new characters of the second Camp Half-Blood series were in danger where he last left them. I cannot wait to get that as well as the first in his new ‘The Kane Chronicles” series on Egyptian Mythology. Good luck Mr. Riordan! I hope all goes well!

Sitting proudly on my desk is a hot-off-the-presses copy of Percy Jackson & the Olympians: The Ultimate Guide. It’s a cool companion book for the series, which will be published in only a few weeks: Jan. 18.

Since I’ve been getting a lot of questions about this book, I thought I’d give you a sneak peek, since I don’t want people confused about what they’re getting.

Percy Jackson and the Olympians The Ultimate Guide

Percy Jackson and the Olympians The Ultimate Guide

What it isn’t: It is not a Percy Jackson novel, nor is it a collection of short stories like the Demigod Files. I don’t want people buying it with that impression and being disappointed!

What it is: A full-color compendium of Percy Jackson’s world. It comes in a flip-book format with a closing magnetic clasp, and a cover page with a cool band of holographic images that change as you move the book. Inside are 148 pages of Percy Jackson facts, trivia, and illustrations. There are also mini trading cards for important characters in the series. The book has sections on Percy Jackson’s background, life at Camp Half-Blood, gods & spirits, a Greek mythology bestiary, and a storehouse of the gods featuring all the magic items and weapons found in the series.

My favorite sections are probably Nico di Angelo’s guide to the Underworld and the section exploring Daedalus’s Labyrinth. You’ll find many new color illustrations, including a portrait of the camp, a map of its layout, and a look inside Daedalus’ workshop. Ever wanted to know what a dracaena looks like, or the Manticore, or a Laestrygonian giant playing dodgeball-of-death? The Ultimate Guide has pictures of all these and more.

To tell the truth, I’ve found the Ultimate Guide very helpful myself, as I’m in the midst of writing the first book in the new Camp Half-Blood series. The guide has helped me keep things straight about who had what magic item, which monster appeared in which book, and how the gods and spirits were interconnected.

So if that sounds worth checking out to you, give The Ultimate Guide a look! And coming soon, as promised, a little more information about The Kane Chronicles: The Red Pyramid which *is* a full-length adventure novel and will be released May 4.

Now I’m off to write more about our friends at Camp Half-Blood. When I last left them, they were in a pretty dangerous spot — ah, but more on that later.

You can guarantee yourself a copy by heading over to Amazon – become a PJO pro!

January - 7 - 2010 Comments

Rick Riordan announced on his blog that there is a Percy Jackson and the Olympians: The Ultimate Guide coming out just in time for The Lightning Thief movie!

And finally, Disney-Hyperion will be releasing Percy Jackson and the Olympians: The Ultimate Guide, in February. I just got my first copy, hot off the presses, and it looks so cool! The cover has this fun holographic band of pictures that change as you move the book. Inside, there is a guide to the gods, camp, monsters, the labyrinth, and much more, all illustrated in full color. Beautiful stuff. My favorite pictures are probably the Manticore and Daedalus’s Workshop.

The Lightning Thief Deluxe Edition

January - 6 - 2010 Comments

Rick Riordan has re-released The Lightning Thief in a deluxe edition in time for those who have read it to read it, and to get those who have never read it (By the way, they are totally missing out!) to check it out before it comes to theaters. The deluxe edition includes the book in a hardcover binding, and new artwork from artist John Rocco. I don’t know about you, but I think the new art looks simply stunning! The two that I can find are: Clarisse fighting Percy with her electric spear, and Hades sitting on his throne of undead souls. (pretty spooky!) What do you think of the new art?

In this stunning collectors’ edition of The Lightning Thief, Percy Jackson’s world is brought to life with eight full-color plates by the series jacket artist John Rocco. The edition comes in an elegant slipcase with a ribbon bookmark, rough edges, and cloth cover–a perfect keepsake for fans of this truly epic series.

You can order the deluxe edition today right here at Amazon.com

New York Times Names The Last Olympian

December - 11 - 2009 Comments

Congratulations to Rick Riordan and for all of the hard work he put in to the Percy Jackson and the Olympians series. We love it.

Book 5: The Last Olympian

Book 5: The Last Olympian

In Riordan’s universe, Greek mythology — along with its vividly imagined heroes and monsters — is alive and well in New York City. Percy, short for Perseus, here concludes his adventures (for the moment) with great humor and inventiveness, not to mention nearly world-ending mayhem.
