The Sea of Monsters Confirmed! Director Named!

June - 17 - 2011 Comments

thor-fAfter over a year of waiting we have finally confirmed the good news! The Sea of Monsters will start production soon, Logan Lerman is confirmed to return (no surprise there) and they have also named a director to helm this production! Fandango.com has announced that ‘Diary of a Wimpy Kid’ director Thor Freudenthal has signed on to direct Percy Jackson #2.

The Los Angeles Times is reporting that the production has now locked down both star Logan Lerman, who plays Percy, as well as director Thor Freudenthal. Freudenthal is best known for helming Diary of a Wimpy Kid and will direct the script from the writing team of Scott Alexander and Larry Karaszweski (Ed Wood, Agent Cody Banks).

With the Harry Potter franchise concluding next month, Fox is hoping to sate the appetite of audiences hungering for fantastical adventure movies with this second Percy movie. Current plans are to move quickly into production and have the movie ready as early as 2012.

This is some pretty cool news! After all this time we finally have the answer to the question that has been in all our minds for well over a year. “Will they make a sequel to The Lightning Thief?” Well we now know the answer is yes!
So what do you think? What would you like to see in The Sea of Monsters? Who would you cast as Tyson, Clarisse, and the rest of the new characters? Let us know in the comments below and in the forum!

Sea Of Monsters Update

May - 18 - 2011 Comments

Percy Jackson and the Olympians: The Lightning Thief was a moderate success for Fox 2000, making about $226 million worldwide on a $95 million budget (though most of that money came from overseas). The film was always intended to kick off a tentpole franchise for Fox 2000, so it’s not really surprising to hear that the studio is adapting the second book in author Rick Riordan’s five-volume series into a movie.

The LA Times’ 24 Frames has an insider claiming that Percy Jackson and the Olympians: The Sea of Monsters is going into “active development,” and could even start shooting as soon as this summer.

In the first film, young Percy Jackson (Logan Lerman) discovered he was a demigod, spawned from the union of Poseidon and a human woman. When he was framed for stealing Zeus’ thunderbolt, Percy and his friends went on a quest to find the stolen weapon and eventually discovered and defeated the real thief, saving the world from a war between the gods.

In Riordan’s second book, Percy must save “Camp Half-Blood” the safe haven where demigods are protected from evil by magic barriers. Someone has poisoned the barriers, so it’s up to Percy and Co. to venture into “The Sea of Monsters” to find the mythical Golden Fleece to save the camp.

The primary cast is expected to return for this next installment, and that list would presumably include Logan Lerman, Brandon T. Jackson, Alexandra Daddario, Sean Bean, Pierce Brosnan, Katherine Keener and Kevin McKidd. Writing duo Scott Alexander and Larry Karaszewski are handling the script; the pair have a diverse resume, including films like 1408, Agent Cody Banks, The People vs. Larry Flynt, Ed Wood and Problem Child 1 & 2. Take that how you will.

Director Chris Columbus (who also did the first two Harry Potter films), is not expected to return to direct Sea of Monsters, but will reportedly produce the pic alongside Breaking Dawn producer, Karen Rosenfelt. Take that how you will.

Percy Jackson & the Sea of monsters

Jackson, Lerman and Daddario in ‘The Lightning Thief’

The first Percy Jackson was entertaining enough – especially for the young adult crowd. The lead actors in particular (Lerman, Jackson and Daddario) had good chemistry and the story is a fun little twist on Greek Mythology. It’s not as immersive or epic as Harry Potter , but it was certainly more entertaining than the Narnia movies (for me at least). I’m not mad at them for making another one – plus, the whole “Sea of Monsters” thing could be cool on the big screen (in 3D, no doubt).

We’ll update you about Percy Jackson and the Olympians: The Sea of Monsters when an official announcement is made.

The Lightning Thief DVD Release Date

April - 14 - 2010 Comments

Well, according to one of our top secret sources (it’s actually not that secret, and not even really a private “source”) the release date for Percy Jackson and the Olympians: The Lightning Thief is sometime this summer………. as a matter of fact it’s supposedly June 22nd!

Bonus features in the Blu-Ray Disc includes a Blu-Ray, DVD and Digital Copy for your iPod combo pack, 10 deleted scenes, 6 featurettes and a quiz!

Here are a few more details you might find interesting:

According to our friend Bill Hunt over at The Digital Bits, FOX has plans to bring the Chris Columbus directed film “Percy Jackson & the Olympians: The Lightning Thief” to Blu-ray Disc on June 22nd. The film is based on the novel by Rick Riordan. This will come in a “combo” style release and include the Blu-ray + DVD + Digital Copy.

Tech specs include full 1080p Hi-Def and DTS-HD 5.1 Master Audio sound. The title is not yet available for pre-order but stay tuned and we will keep you updated. Bonus materials are set to include 10 deleted scenes, 6 featurettes and a quiz. We’ll have full details on the bonus materials once we get the press release for this (likely later today or later this week).

What do you think? I’m excited for the combo pack, because it’s like a $70 value (if you buy it all separate), and on amazon.com it’s usually like $25. We’ll post a link to amazon once you can pre-order it!

New Riordan Release is May 4

April - 7 - 2010 Comments

Rick Riordan is getting close to what I’m sure is every writers Super Bowl or World Series… the day their new work goes public for the world to read. Some will love it, but some can hate it. It is the readers’ chance to have a say.

We look forward to The Red Pyramid, and as always wish Mr. Riordan continued success. Here’s a quick update from his blog:

In case you missed it, Publishers Weekly ran a nice article last week about my upcoming projects.

One month exactly until The Red Pyramid is released. I’m getting really excited! The first review just came out from Shelf Awareness, and I couldn’t ask for better:

“Rick Riordan will launch a new middle-grade series on May 4. For anyone who was afraid he couldn’t top his Percy Jackson series or his initial title in the 39 Clues, fear no more. Readers will be clamoring for the next installment.”

I hope you all agree when it comes out! Be sure to check out the cover and first chapter on Disney’s Kane Chronicles website.

Rick Riordan Won’t See The Lightning Thief

March - 16 - 2010 Comments

Rick Riordan was recently in New York for a event at The Met. He talked about the new CHB series coming this fall, as well as the new Egyptian Mythology series “The Kane Chronicles” book one coming out this May. Another interesting bit was that he has never seen the movie for PJO and doesn’t plan to. You can read the full news piece below…

Rick Riordan, the author the bestselling “Percy Jackson & the Olympians” series of books for young readers, paid a visit on Sunday to the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City to discuss some of his classical inspirations.

The first book in his series, “Percy Jackson & The Olympians: The Lightning Thief,” tells the story of a troubled young boy with ADHD and dyslexia who discovers that the Greek gods are real, and that he’s actually the son of a mortal woman and Poseidon, god of the sea.

Riordan kicked off his talk at the Met’s Grace Rainey Rogers Auditorium by apologizing for the rainy weather outside. “Thanks for braving Zeus’s storm!” he told the audience, which was largely made up of young children and parents.

During the presentation, Riordan said he planned to launch a new “Camp Half Blood” series in the Fall of 2010, most likely in October, though the final details haven’t been set. In his books, Camp Half Blood is a special area that shelters and trains the children of gods and mortals.

He also talked about his coming book “The Kane Chronicles, Book One: The Red Pyramid.” The new series draws on the myths of Egypt, and is due out May 4.

“I was fascinated by how magic works in Egypt,” Riordan told Speakeasy in an interview after the event. He said he was intrigued by the section in the Bible in which Moses confronts Egyptian magicians. “I wanted to explore the Egyptian idea of magic,” he said.

Recently, a big-screen adaptation of “The Lightning Thief” was released into theaters. Riordan said he hasn’t seen the film and doesn’t plan to. “Books and movies are so different,” he said. He said he wanted to keep his own images of his characters in his head and didn’t want them to be replaced by someone else’s interpretation.

PJO Top Grossing Film Of The Year (So Far)

March - 1 - 2010 Comments

The Lightning Thief is the year’s top grossing film of the last two months!

That’s pretty cool. Although other films like Alice In Wonderland could quickly de-throne it. Hopefully it’ll stay for a while, but we’ll just have to see.

Also, the film has been estimated to have made about $9,800,000 this weekend and was #5 in the top films this weekend. With about a 36% fall from last weekend it seems to be holding alright.

All Five PJO Books On USA Today’s Current Top Sellers

February - 24 - 2010 Comments

Congratulations Mr Riordan! This is very impressive! This series is amazing, which can be enjoyed by anyone. I know tons of people who love PJO, though I may be the biggest fan out of that category.

These books have something for everyone, and if you’re on this site just looking up Percy Jackson and the Olympians, and wondering if you should read these books, I think that the numbers speak for themselves! All five books in USA Today’s Top 10 books. Quite an impressive feat. Anyways, you can read the excerpt on PJO below!

Rick Riordan’s series reaches Olympian heights; Charles Pellegrino gets a Hiroshima history lesson; and a big buzz surrounds ‘Little Bee.’
‘Lightning’ strikes: Sales of Rick Riordan’s Percy Jackson novels are reaching Olympian heights. All five books in the kids’ series are in USA TODAY’s top 10. It’s the first time that has happened, and sales are being driven by the movie version of the first book. (In its first two weeks, Percy Jackson & the Olympians: The Lightning Thief has earned $58.7 million.)

Accounting for half of the top 10 is impressive, but Riordan has a long way to go to break Stephenie Meyer’s record. The four books in her Twilight series have been in the top 10 a total of 66 weeks. J.K. Rowling had six of the seven Harry Potter titles in the top 10 just one week in 2007.

But rankings on the list don’t tell the whole story. Numbers in print in the USA for Rowling, 143 million; Meyer, 45 million; Riordan, 12 million.

Logan Is Spider-Man?? Cast Announced

February - 23 - 2010 Comments

www.thecinemasource.com has posted exclusive news that Logan Lerman, star of Percy Jackson has been cast as Spider-Man in the Marc Webb’s reboot of the comic book series adaption. Now, this is very believable news as to the casting of Logan for Spiderman.

BUT, until we get an official announcement please treat this as a RUMOR! We will definitely keep you updated on this news story.

logan-lerman-as-spiderman

Inside sources say that Percy Jackson star, Logan Lerman has been cast in the Sony reboot of the Spider-Man film series. Director Marc Webb (500 Days of Summer) is set to helm the first film in what I’m guessing will be another trilogy although that has not been confirmed at this time.

The story takes the characters back to high school in the New York City borough of Queens. No word yet on who has been cast as Peter Parker’s love interest Mary Jane Watson formerly played by Kirsten Dunst or his best friend Harry Osborn previously played by Mr. James Franco.

Webb is in talks with Avatar director James Cameron to use his cameras and technique to film the entire movie in 3-D.

The official announcement will no doubt come shortly along with more details to follow.
